The History of Savannah

With history galore, history buffs are going to love the small city of Savannah Georgia. This rustic gem is the known as Historic District because it is one of the most historic landmarks in all of the United States. From Indian slavery to the Civil War, straight through to the modern world, Savannah has kept, restored, and proudly boasted its history through historical mansions, monuments, and even hotels. "General James Oglethorpe"Though small, Savannah has big history. Unlike many other cities in the US, Savannah played a huge role in the way our nation is today. Founded on February twelfth, 1773 by General James Oglethorpe and his settlers that landed at Yamacraw Bluff, Savannah was once home to the Tomochichi and Yamacraw, and Shawnee Indians. If you love history, Savannah is filled with it clear back from 1773 when the first men stepped foot on Indian ground.

"Wormsloe Historic Site"Though Indians were traded and sold back then, Savannah inherited much of the Indian culture. The city was named after the Savannah River, and it is probably derived from the variations of the names of the Shawnee Indians. The Shawnee Indians were known by several different names including: Shawano, Savano, Savana and Savannah. Thus, Savannah Georgia inherited its name even from the Indians of the time. You may even find great southern food that was passed down from the Indian tribes of the area. Come lavish in the greatness of this Savannah history.

Through history, Savannah has experienced change and of course modernization, but has held dear to the historical buildings of the time. Today, Savannah Georgia is a huge industrial center and a vital seaport. It is Georgia’s fourth biggest city and is the third largest of the metropolitan areas. Each year Savannah’s historic allure and beauty attracts millions of tourists to lavish in all that Savannah Georgia has to offer.

Come visit Savannah’s historic downtown which includes the Savannah Historic district, the Victorian District, and twenty two park-like areas. As the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States, Savannah Georgia is sure to impress. Keeping the original town plan of founder James Oglethorpe known as the Oglethorpe plan, Savannah is a picturesque display of art, history, and beauty and one to visit just for the history itself.
